Use the AI Template Importer to rebuild an existing HTML email or screenshot as an editable Unlayer template. After importing, you can rearrange rows, edit text, replace images, and adjust styles in the builder.
This is an AI reconstruction workflow, not direct editing of your original HTML source. Review the result and make any final adjustments before using it.
Import from the Unlayer Console
Open your project's Templates tab in the Console.
Click AI Template Importer in the top-right corner.
Drag in a file or choose one from your computer. Supported files are
.html,.htm,.png,.jpg,.jpeg,.webp, and.gif, up to 5 MB.Name your template and optionally choose a folder.
Click Import. When the import finishes, your new template opens in the editor.
Import inside an embedded builder
Your application must enable embedded imports first. The action is off by default and requires an editor release with Template Importer support. It also depends on the AI Assistant's plan and end-user identification requirements.
Open the AI Assistant with Full Template selected.
Open the + menu and choose Import from HTML or image, or drag a supported file onto the Assistant panel.
Optionally add instructions, then send the attachment.
If the canvas already contains content, confirm that you want to replace it. A successful import replaces the canvas in one undoable change.
If the action is missing, ask your application's developer to check features.ai.templateImporter, full-template generation, and the editor version. Selecting a row or content tool hides the import action. See the embedded setup reference for the exact requirements.
Plans and credits
The importer is a paid AI feature and uses your workspace's existing AI credit allowance, shared with other projects and AI features. It does not require a separate importer add-on. If your plan does not include AI features, the Console importer button will not appear.
See credits and limits for usage and available options when your credits run out.
What should I check after importing?
Review spacing, colors, fonts, and links before using the template.
Screenshot imports use image placeholders; replace them with your original images.
Embedded fonts are not carried over. Add a required custom font to your Project Fonts.
Very long HTML can exceed the importer's input limit even when the file is under 5 MB. Remove sections you don't need or try a screenshot instead.
Import one file at a time.
Is this the same as the legacy HTML editor?
No. The legacy classic editor uses HTML only and does not produce design JSON. It is a separate workflow from rebuilding a template with the AI Template Importer.
The legacy documentation also warns that loading full document structure, such as <html> or <body> tags, is unsupported since editor version 1.249.0; it documents version 1.227.0 or lower for that older behavior. Read the Legacy Templates reference before maintaining an existing classic-mode integration.
